Eastern Cape, ALICE, Urban area / Eastern Cape, ALICE, Lovedale Mission burial ground, Gaga cemetery / (5 of 28 images)
Cemetery / Memorials Information: In reading up on the internet about John Knox Bokwe I saw it mentioned that he was “buried in the Gaga Cemetery alongside other missionaries associated with Lovedale.” This does not match up as Bokwe and his wife are buried with just a freed slave’s grave next to theirs on your right after crossing the Gaga stream approaching Lovedale (32° 46' 44.38" S, 26° 50' 3.05" E). It did however get me wondering if there were more graves and we eventually found some among bushes NW of Lovedale. I presume this is the Gaga Cemetery referred to but at 32° 46' 7.28" S, 26° 49' 51.52" E, it is nowhere near the Bokwe grave. We found it after driving through a brickyard and thornbush area that necessitated some trimming before stumbling across graves in bushes after quite a search. Approaching it via the village behind Lovedale might be a better option. (Robert Speirs)
