Eastern Cape, ALICE, Urban area / Eastern Cape, ALICE, Lovedale, Old private cemetery / (1 of 8 images)
Cemetery / Memorials Information: Not far from the Hospital and close to a walkway from there to Fort Hare is what I gather was a tiny private cemetery belonging to Captain C.J. Stretch. It has just two old graves that of his mother and brother in law. Not sure what the shaped stone we found lying some 25 meters away was, if it had marked a grave or had been a boundary beacon? The thatched stone house was called Domera and was Stretch’s place. He encouraged the missionaries to come set up a new mission station in these parts after Old Lovedale was destroyed in the 6th F/W. In the background is Fort Hare. Pic are just of two old buildings still standing at Lovedale. One was a missionary’s house, the other a church. (Robert Speirs)
