Artist and painter. Erich (Ernst Karl) Mayer was born in Karlsruhe, Germany. Mayer was educated in Berlin and moved to South Africa in 1898. He was appointed Assistant Land-Surveyor and joined the Boer Forces. He was sent to St. Helena as prisoner-of-war.
